Citizens yet to obtain NIN risk 14 years imprisonment - FG

Isa Pantami

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said citizens who are yet to register for their National Identification Number (NIN) risk 14 years jail term.

This was made known by the Minister of Communications and Digital Strategy, Isa Pantami, during a press briefing at the State House on Thursday, April 1.

Pantami disclosed that as of March 31, 2021, 51 million Nigerians have registered for their NIN.

“There are 189 million registered subscriber identification module (SIM) cards in the country," he said.

He noted that of this figure, only 150 million people have completed registrations while others have issues of improper registration.

The Minister warned that those yet to obtain their NIN risk 7 or 14 years imprisonment as stipulated by the country's constitution.

He stressed that owing a SIM card is optional but NIN is mandatory.
