World's Oldest Known Wild Bird Gives Birth To Another Chick At Age 70

As announced by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the world's oldest known wild bird, 'wisdom the albatross', has birthed a chick at the age of 70 years. 

The Laysan albatross had hatched her chick on February 1, in a wildlife refuge in the North Pacific Ocean. 

Although she had hatched her chick in February, the birth which took place in the Midway Atoll national wildlife refuge in a US minor outlying island in the North Pacific, has however only been reported this week. 

According to the USFWS, Laysan albatrosses usually only live for 12 to 40 years but Wisdom case was first identified by researchers in 1956.

"Wisdom laid her egg sometime during the last few days of November. 

"Soon after, Wisdom returned to sea to forage and her mate Akeakamai took over incubation duties. Albatross parents share incubation duties and once the chick hatches, share feeding duties," the USFWS while announcing the new arrival wrote in its statement. 

Meanwhile, the father of the chick, Akeakamai, has been with Wisdom since 2012, the US wildlife officials said. 

The USFWS believes that Wisdom has had at least 30 to 36 chicks in her lifetime which is remarkable as albatrosses only hatch one egg every few years. 

It is also believed that Wisdom had other partners in the past that are now dead, as albatrosses mate for life.
