The virus which is reportedly rare and spread by fruits bats, can cause brain damage, flu-like symptoms, encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
While the usual treatment is supportive care, a statistics chart however of the 'Nipah' virus outbreak in India's southern state, Kerala, in 2018, showed 17 lives claimed with countries like United Arab Emirate (UAE) and Saudi Arabia temporarily placing ban on frozen, processed fruits and vegetable imports from Kerala as a result of the outbreak there.
At the above stated period, health officials believed that Nipah outbreaks in India and Bangladesh were perhaps associated with the drinking of date palm juice.
“Nipah virus is another emerging infectious disease that causes great concern. Nipah could blow any moment. The next pandemic could be a drug-resistant infection,” the executive director of the Netherlands-based 'Access to Medicine Foundation' was quoted as saying. (Culled from Guardian)
