ASUU Deny Plans To Call Off 8-Months Long Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has denied plans to call off the 8-months long strike. 

This comes after a report which went viral last night that ASUU has concluded plans to call off the long strike after a held meeting with Government representatives led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Friday, November 27.

In the meeting held with ASUU representatives at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Federal Government reportedly agreed to increase its offer for Earned Allowances to university based unions and funding for the revitalization of public universities from N65billion to N70billion. 

Viral reports last night claimed the union would call off the strike after the Federal Government's pledge on increased Earned allowances and revitalization of the university system, bringing to a total payment of N70billion.

However, while speaking in a chat with Vanguard, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, denied any plans to call off the strike. 

He stressed that it was only agreed in the meeting that the Union should convey Government message to their organs and get back to the Government. 

Prof. Ogunyemi in his words said;

”All I know is that we had a meeting and we are going to report to our members. But I don’t know about suspension of strike.”
