With the exception of Senior Secondary School 3 students, SSS3, who have been allowed to resume school due to the ongoing West African Examination Council, WAEC, which started August 4, 2020, schools still remain closed.
This is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the high recorded confirmed cases in the country.
There is an atmosphere of uncertainty right now regarding school resumption. To be sincere, while students are getting really frustrated, parents and teachers are also very much affected.
The guess on the major questions on people's mind would be; Why are schools not yet reopened when markets, religion places and others have been allowed to open?,Why can elections be conducted and school activities not allowed?.
It is of hope that these questions could be answered to some extent because while some states are bracing up towards school resumption with laid down guidelines and rules to protect the lives of both the students and teachers, some academic unions are still not in support of it.
However, tertiary institution students should pay close attention to this piece of information, as most are aware that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) president, Biodun Ogunyemi, had said before now that schools should only be opened when it is considered safe for students and lecturers.
Ezebie said that there is no need to be emotional about resumption, stating that schools were paused as the safety of students and teachers were paramount.
He faulted the government, as significant steps have not been taken in the various tertiary institutions across the country as at March.
According to Mr Ezeibe, there was no need to shut down schools if schools will be reopened now.
He affirmed that polytechnic lecturers are not ready to expose theirselves to COVID-19 risk.
