A 22-year-old singer identified as Yahaya Sharif, has been sentenced to death by a upper Sharia's court sitting in Kano state, for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
Mr Sharif, a resident of Sharifai in Kano metropolis, was sentenced to death by hanging.
He was accused of committing blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad in one of his released songs in March, 2020.
Following the release of the blasphemy song, protesters in a show of rage had burnt down the singer's family home and led a funeral procession to the Kano Hisbah Command Headquarters.
The verdict which was passed on Monday by the presiding judge, Aliyu Kani, found Mr Sharif guilty as charged.
He was convicted based on Section 382 (b), Kano Penal Code, 2000.
Meanwhile, Mr Sharif's father, Aminu Sharif, had disowned his son after he committed the crime.
According to Mr Aminu, he does not share the same religious views with his son.
Also, another Umar Farouq, of Sharada quarters of Kano metropolis, was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment with hard Labour, for allegedly making public derogatory statements against the "Almighty Allah".
Both convicts have the privilege of 30 days to appeal the given judgement.
