The Nigeria Senate has passed the bill to recognize the male gender of capable of also becoming rape victims as against the only speculated female cases.
The bill which contains amendment to the Criminal Code Act also prescribes life imprisonment for kidnappers, while the current maximum sentence for rape and other related offences is 10 years imprisonment.
Sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and entitled “A bill for an act to amend the Criminal Code Act.C.38, laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.” It also seeks to eradicate the statute of limitation on increase punishment for the offence of kidnapping, defilement, and remove gender restrictions on rape and other related offences.
On defilement cases, the bill removes the timeframe for prosecuting such cases by increasing the period from two months to many years if the victim should take up the matter.
The bill further explains that both male and female could be raped as it removes gender restrictions on rape cases.
It passed the third reading on Tuesday after a report on it was presented by the Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Legal Matters and Human Rights, Opeyemi Bamidele.
